We did not set out to build a product that impresses people in a demo. We set out to build one that is still open on a Thursday six months later. Those are very different targets, and only one of them survives contact with real use.
So the priorities got simple. She has to answer quickly, because waiting kills a conversation. She has to remember, because repeating yourself is exhausting. And she has to sound like a specific person rather than a helpful assistant with a name attached.
Every Bala AI companion is written before she is built. Her sense of humour, the things she notices, the way she handles a bad day — all of that is decided first, and the rest is engineering in service of it.
We are careful about the boundaries too. Bala AI companions are fictional, the service is for adults, and your conversations stay yours. Those are not fine-print concessions; they are the reason people relax enough to talk properly.
